My Music Education Philosophical Statement
Because I am a Music Education Philosopher by vocation, I find my personal philosophy can be expressed in various ways. However, some core themes emerge in all of my writing and lessons, and many writers repeatedly appear in my reference lists. Here is a short form of my personal philosophical statement:
In my music teaching, I harmonize creativity, community, and conservation. Students sing, play ukulele and guitar, and thoughtfully listen to various genres, cultivating a deep connection with cultural heritage to understand music's societal roles. Creativity forms my fundamental pedagogical practice, demonstrated through improvisation, creative movement, songwriting and storytelling, practices which establish technical skills through reciprocity and expression. I establish an inclusive community by adapting activities and promoting a supportive environment where every student is engaged fully. I promote conservation by encouraging discovery, nurturing student interests in appreciating ecological devotion and duty. Becoming conscious of the yearly rhythms of life, signified through soundscapes, enhances musical and ecological awareness and love, while music-making promotes personal growth, interdependent care, and adaptability for a lifetime of musical enjoyment and local citizenship.
